Dissatisfaction with managed care growing
If you're wondering why you're having to deal with more and more regulations that focus on holding down costs and raising profits, it's because Congress and state legislatures are reacting to patients' indignation over the way things are going in health care.
A recent Harris survey of 1,000 patients showed that 54% of Americans believe the trend toward managed care will cause them harm, an increase from 43% a year earlier. Two years ago 59% liked the trend, and 28% did not. Another survey taken just after disclosures of widespread overbilling by Columbia/HCA Health Care Corporation disclosed the public's plunging regard for for-profit organizations, regarding both quality of care and efficiency. Physicians are equally dissatisfied. 55% of 2,000 physicians surveyed in 1995 said the health care system is deteriorating overall, especially in areas with entrenched managed care.
