The American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet Recognition Program includes several requirements relating to ethics.
“The principles of ethical practice and patient care are embedded throughout the 2023 Magnet Manual and have, in fact, always been a part of the Magnet requirements", says Maureen Lal, DNP, MSN, RN, director of the Magnet Recognition Program.
Ethics is included in the program’s foundational items, which must be in place for the hospital to be certified as a Magnet hospital. The organizational overview requirement mandates the hospital to create policies and procedures that address “patient ethical issues and/or needs.”
The Exemplary Professional Practice component requires nurses to “use available resources to address ethical issues related to clinical practice and organizational ethical situations.”
Organizations must provide one example, with supporting evidence, of nurses using available resources to address an ethical issue, either one relating to clinical practice or an organizational issue. “The Magnet framework does not dictate how the work is done in an organization,” Lal adds. “The Magnet provides a framework of what should be in place, not how it should be done.”
