Eligibility requirements for certification revised
If you’re a social worker or other health care professional in a state that does not require an examination for licensure, you may be eligible to take the certified case manager (CCM) examination.
The Commission for Case Management Certification (CCMC) in Rolling Meadows, IL, has revised its eligibility requirements for the certification examination and eliminated the requirement that applicants have an approved professional license awarded on the basis of an examination.
Applicants still have to meet other requirements for certification and take a comprehensive examination.
The change in eligibility criteria was approved by the full commission in May and opens the door for social workers and other health professionals to take the CCM exam in October.
"There are several states that don’t require examinations to license social workers, which means that social workers in these states couldn’t meet our criteria. This was brought to our attention through representatives of the social work professional," says Robert Boccaccio, Jr., chair of the CCM Eligibility Compliance and Certification Renewal Committee.
The board unanimously approved the change because "we do not feel our criteria should supercede what a state requires," he says.
The move was part of the CCMC’s efforts to make the CCM more accessible to all case management professionals without compromising its standards. Earlier this year, the Commission changed its exam schedule from December and June to April and October, effective this October.
CCM certification is the only national certification for case managers that is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies, Boccaccio says.
As a social worker who has earned the CCM credential, Michael Demoratz, PhD, LCSW, CCM, a care management consultant in Mission Viejo, CA, urges his fellow social workers to seek the certification.
"The CCM designation is recognized as implying a certain degree of knowledge and expertise in case management. I have clients who might shy away from hiring a social worker, who employ my services because I have a CCM," he adds.
