Intravascular radiation therapy takes step forward
Indianapolis-based Guidant Corporation recently entered into an agreement with Netherlands-based Nucletron-BV to develop and distribute radiation therapy peripheral vascular catheters. Preliminary studies have shown that such catheters, through the delivery of radiation therapy in conjunction with angioplasty or other interventional technologies, have the potential to reduce or eliminate restenosis, the re-narrowing of the artery.
A Guidant spokesperson told Home Infusion Therapy Management that the studies have all been done in inpatient settings, and the potential for the delivery of such therapy in the home depends in large part on the development and advancement of the angioplasty and stenting markets.
