Home care can substitute for postpartum hospitalization
Postpartum maternal and newborn home care got a boost in a survey published in the May-June 1997 issue of the journal Health Affairs. Ninety-two percent of the 5,201 women surveyed in the study said they’d be willing to go home within 24 hours of delivery time. But most said they’d only be willing to do so if they had follow-up care at home."The majority of women want to leave the hospital as soon as they can," Julie Gazmararian, principal author of the study, told USA Today. Gazmararian also is a director at the Prudential Center for Health Research in Atlanta. "But most want to be sure they can get the care they need at home, and that’s what we as a society should be focused on."
The center is a subsidiary of the Prudential Insurance Corp. All the survey respondents were members of Prudential managed care plans and had uncomplicated vaginal births.
