Staff issues top priority in information technology
Recruiting and retaining high-quality staff is the number one priority in health care information technology (IT), according to results of the ninth annual Healthcare Information and Manage ment Systems Society (HIMSS) Leader ship Survey on trends in the IT field. Results also include the following:
· Computer-based patient records are a distant goal, with respondents citing the lack of a standardized vocabulary, inadequate IT infrastructure, and resistance from administration as the roadblocks to implementation.
· The biggest concern regarding the security of medical information continues to be internal security breaches.
· Sophisticated Internet applications are still largely absent from the health care organization's repertoire.
· Voice recognition is the No. 1 emerging health care information technology.
The society reports that detailed results of the survey (accessible on the Web at http://www.himss.org or http://www.solutions.ibm.com/ healthcare) represent the opinions of 1,754 senior executives and managers from health care provider organizations worldwide. Chicago-based HIMSS represents more than 10,000 individuals in clinical systems, information systems, management engineering, and telecommunications.
