Americans want Medicaid AIDS safety net
Nearly 70% of Americans support expanding Medicaid in order to get new AIDS drugs into the hands of low-income people in the early stages of infection, according to a recent poll.
The poll, conducted by American Viewpoint for AIDS Action, surveyed 1,000 voters. Other polls have consistently shown that the American public opposes cutting Medicaid benefits. Last month, Vice President Al Gore asked the Health Care Financing Administration to find ways to expand Medicaid, which provides medical coverage for 53% of persons with AIDS.
"The proposed Medicaid expansion initiative has tapped into the pulse of America around one of the key issues in the fight against AIDS," says Daniel Zingale, AIDS Action’s executive director.
