Foscavir receives new indication

The Food and Drug Administration has authorized a new indication for foscarnet sodium (Foscavir) for AIDS-related cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis. The indication allows the use of the drug in combination with intravenous ganciclovir (Cytovene) in CMV retinitis patients who have relapsed after an initial course of single treatment with either drug.

Foscavir also may be prescribed as monotherapy for the treatment of AIDS-related CMV retinitis and for the treatment of acyclovir-resistant mucocutaneous herpes simplex virus infections in immunocompromised patients.
