Who’s looking at whose business?
How do managed care providers collect and use patient-specific health data, while simultaneously protecting the privacy of the patient? The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare organizations and the National Committee for Quality Assurance recently addressed this question at the first of two strategic workshops in Washington, DC, in late July.
The public is becoming increasingly concerned with privacy of health information that is highly specific and drawn from a variety of sources, say representatives of both associations who met with experts from government, consumer advocacy, health care research, information technology, and managed care to discuss policy options. JCAHO and NCQA will hold another workshop this fall to prepare specific recommendations to national policy-makers and to the managed care industry.
