IPA group designates PSO section
Since the government recently agreed to allow operation of provider-sponsored organizations (PSOs), the IPA Association of America (TIPAAA) has set up a new section to assist physician groups who are considering establishing a PSO. As part of Congress' Balanced Budget Act of 1997, this decision to allow PSOs is a major change in the health care industry. It also represents a switch to letting physicians make the medical care decisions. Doctors' authority in directing patient care had been deteriorating during the 1990s. The new law is designed to reverses that trend.
The PSO section established by TIPAAA plans to assist its members who are seeking to form PSOs. Operation of the PSO section will be headed by qualified industry professionals whose responsibility will be to educate and counsel members in issues facing physician organizations.
The first meeting TIPAAA's PSO section was held June 9 in Nashville. A second meeting is planned for September 15 in Rancho Mirage, CA. If interested, contact TIPAAA at (510) 569-6561. n
