Detroit health group explores subacute option
Closing acute care hospitals and converting them into subacute care facilities is just one option for the southeastern Michigan area as it adjusts to the changing demands of health care, says Robert Parrish, senior vice president of the Greater Detroit Area Health Council (GDAHC).
"Subacute care is one of the options available and is a feasible alternative, but we first need to determine what our community’s needs are," explains Parrish. GDAHC, a coalition of HMOs, physician practices, employers, and government agencies, is looking at ways to bring community-based reform to the health care delivery system of the seven-county metropolitan Detroit area, he adds.
One of the biggest obstacles to closing acute care hospitals and converting them to other uses is community opposition, says Parrish. Michigan and the Detroit area in particular, have tried to reduce unneeded acute care beds in the past, but have failed. "The bed reduction initiative of the 1970s and 1980s had a minimal effect, and 10 years ago we tried to convert a hospital from acute care to subacute care, but it wasn’t feasible," he adds.
