PCA gets largest Medicaid award in state
The Florida Agency for Health Care Administration in Tallahassee has awarded Miami-based Physician Corp. of America (PCA) capacity in all counties where the company currently serves or proposes to serve Medicaid members. The administration had rated the proposals of more than two dozen health maintenance organizations in a statewide competitive-bidding assessment.
PCA’s membership capacity of 346,000 members in 66 counties was the largest award in the state. The 30-month contract will give PCA the opportunity to significantly increase the company’s current Medicaid membership of 135,000.
Florida’s action makes it the first state to decide which HMOs provide medical care to the poor based on quality as well as price, state officials say.
The Agency for Health Care Administration announced that the new program could potentially apply to 1.4 million Medicaid eligibles in Florida. The assignments currently apply only to newly eligible Medicaid recipients who do not choose a Medicaid managed-care option.
Physician Corp. of America provides comprehensive health care services through its HMOs in Florida, Texas, and Puerto Rico. The company’s 1,012,000 health plan members include commercial groups and individuals as well as beneficiaries of government programs.
