Coalition seeks specific reforms in care of dying
Responding to the distressing findings of the Study to Understand Programs and Preferences for Outcomes and Risks of Treatments and other studies concerning the quality of care for terminally ill patients, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has announced the formation of "Last Acts," a $1.7 million initiative to change the course of dying in America.
Former First Lady Rosalyn Carter is the honorary chairwoman of the campaign. The goal is to seek and carry out reform in three specific areas:
• communication and decision making regarding end-of-life care;
• the professional approach to care for dying patients by health care professionals and health care institutions;
• culture and attitudes of the public toward death.
