Demographics of Managed Care Members
According to a survey by The Commonwealth Fund in New York City, managed care members tend to be younger; less educated; less affluent; African American, Hispanic, or female; and work in smaller firms than adults in fee-for-service plans.o Half (53%) of managed care members are under age 40, compared with 43% of fee-for-service enrollees.
o Twenty-seven percent of managed care members have a high school education or less, compared with 21% of fee-for-service enrollees.
o More than one-third (38%) of managed care members have household incomes of $35,000 or less, compared with one-quarter (25%) of fee-for-service enrollees.
o Adults in racial/ethnic minority groups are more likely to be enrolled in managed care: 17% of managed care members are Hispanic, compared with 12% in fee-for-service; 11% of those in managed care are African American, compared with 8% in fee-for-service.
o Women account for 55% of managed care members and 51% of fee-for-service enrollees.
o Forty-four percent of managed care members work in firms with fewer than 500 employees, compared with 37% of fee-for-service enrollees.
