Legislation delays HIPAA for one year
Newly signed legislation (H.R. 3323) delays implementation of the standards and code sets regulation of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) for one year until Oct. 16, 2003. The delay is effective for providers that have filed a compliance plan or can demonstrate compliance by the new deadline.
The Chicago-based American Hospital Association has issued guidance to assist providers in complying with the new law. Go to the organization’s web site at www.aha.org/hipaa/resources/electransactextention.asp.
The law does not affect the April 14, 2003, deadline for complying with the medical privacy requirements.
