A bevy of key trade shows highlights the IT calendar

Spring is the time for trade shows, and this spring (and yet this winter, as well) there are some good ones for those in the healthcare information technology sector.
The premier event, of course, is the annual Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS; Chicago) conference, scheduled for Feb. 21-25 in Atlanta. This is the biggest and best show covering the healthcare IT field. Contact the HIMSS office in Chicago (877) HIMSS 99 to register.
• Another interesting gathering is the Third Annual Disease Management Conference, Feb. 2-5 in Pasadena, CA. Call (888) 882-2500 to register.
• The HL7 Winter Working Group, Jan. 25-29, in Orlando. Contact HL7 in Ann Arbor, MI, at (734) 677-7777.
• The Congress on Managed Medicare and Medicaid, Jan. 18-20, 1999 in Washington. Contact (888) 882-2500 to register. This is a National Managed Health Care Congress (NMHCC) organization event.
• March (29th through April 1st) will bring the NMHCC conference itself, in Atlanta again this year. With more than 600 vendors and dozens of conference tracks, this is a must-attend gathering for those in the healthcare IT sector.
• A bit later in the spring is TEPR 99 (Toward an Electronic Patient Record), occurring from May 1-6 in Orlando, sponsored by the Medical Records Institute. Call (617) 964-3923 to register.
All of these shows have heavy IT content or are completely focused on IT.
Other conferences this spring may also be of interest to IT vendors because of the specialized markets they serve and the IT needs of those markets. Perhaps the most important is the American College of Cardiology (ACC; Bethesda, MD) conference in New Orleans, March 7-10. Registration is (800) 650-6870. Cardiologists often are medical directors of cardiac care units, excellent markets for point-of-care computerized patient record (CPR) systems.
The Society of Critical Care Medicine, Jan. 24-29 in San Francisco, is a much smaller meeting, but has useful conference tracks for vendors with point-of-care CPR products for surgery and intensive care units. Even emergency department system vendors might be interested in this one.
Because nurses are the primary users of most point-of-care CPR systems, attendance at the American Association of Critical Care Nurses’ annual National Teach ing Institute, May 16-20 in New Orleans, may also be useful.
