• Richard Rava, PhD, has been named to the newly-created position of senior vice president and chief technology officer for Affymetrix (Santa Clara, CA), developer of the GeneChip system platform technology for acquiring, analyzing and managing complex genetic information. Previously, Rava was director of biomedical engineering and senior scientist at Affymax Research Institute.
• Brian Bullard has been named vice president and chief information officer for AxCell Biosciences, a subsidiary of Cytogen (Princeton, NJ). The position calls for Bullard to shape AxCell’s proteomic information technology platform, targeted to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Bullard previously was responsible for the scientific and market data valuation for Perkin-Elmer’s life sciences division, PE Biosystems.
• Susan Warchall has been named vice president of medical informatics for the newly-created Clinical Research and Medical Informatics Division of Coram Healthcare (Denver). She will work out of the division’s facility at Bannockburn, IL. Most recently Warchall was director, medical informatics, for Medpartners.
• Dragon Systems (Newton, MA), a developer of speech recognition systems, has made three executive appointments. Company co-founder Janet Baker, PhD, has been promoted from president to CEO and chairman. John Shagoury has been named president and elected to the board of directors. He was formerly president of North America for Corporate Software & Technology. Co-founder and former Chairman and CEO James Baker, PhD, now will chair the company’s technical advisory board.
• Mark Emkjer has been named chief operating officer of Sunquest Information Systems (Tucson, AZ). Emkjer previously was president and CEO of PACE. Sunquest specializes in the management of complex clinical and administrative healthcare information.
