News From the End of Life: VA offers fellowships in palliative care
The Department of Veterans Affairs is offering one-year fellowships in palliative care at six sites in 2002. Beginning between July and September 2002, each of the six training sites will be selecting up to four one-year fellows/trainees. At least one and no more than two of these fellows may be a physician at each of the sites. Each site will select one to three nonphysician fellow/ trainee positions in disciplines involved in palliative care, such as nursing, social work, pharmacy, psychology, and chaplaincy. The training for associated health disciplines may be for a period of one year or less, depending on the discipline and the curriculum plan.
The goal of the fellowship program is to develop leaders with vision, knowledge, and commitment to palliative care and to increase recruitment and retention of these specialists for the Veterans Health Administration. There is no obligation to work for the VA after completion of the program.
The VA is looking for physicians with post-residency experience and board certification. Health fellows should have degrees in their respective programs.
