Penicillium marneffei Infection in HIV-Infected Travelers
Antinori and colleagues describe the second case of HIV-associated penicilliosis in Italy caused by P. marneffei (the first was reported by Viviani in 1993), and then summarize the epidemiological, microbiological, and clinical characteristics of all cases from non-endemic regions reported in the literature, a total of 35 cases, abstracted from a Medline search covering 1988 to December 2004. -
Health Considerations for Hajj Travelers
Ahmed and colleagues performed an extensive search on publications related to the Hajj pilgrimage from the past 40 years. They described the major communicable and non-communicable diseases present at Hajj, examined the response of clinicians, the Saudi Ministry of Health, and Hajj authorities to these health issues, and also listed recommendations for future pilgrims. -
Poliomyelitis: Progress Toward Global Eradication
As of June 25, 2006, India had reported 60 polio cases for 2006; 57 being wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) and 3 wild poliovirus type 3 (WPV3). Of these cases, 46 were from Uttar Pradesh (UP) state, 12 from Bihar state, one from Madhya Pradesh state bordering UP, and one from Jharkhand state bordering Bihar. -
