ARHP webinar focuses on contraceptive risks
Sign up for the free Aug. 29 webinar, "Risk Made Real: A Case-Based Approach to Addressing Risk in Contraception," sponsored by the Association of Reproductive Health Professionals (ARHP). The noon session will be led by James Trussell, PhD, professor of economics and public affairs and director of the Office of Population Research at Princeton (NJ) University.
ARHP designates this internet enduring material for a maximum of one American Medical Association Physician' s Recognition Award Category 1 Credit. The webinar is designed for health professionals who provide reproductive health services, including physicians, nurse practitioners, nurse-midwives, physician assistants, educators, researchers, and other professionals who work in obstetrics/gynecology, family medicine, and related fields.
By completing the webinar, participants should be able to assess factors that influence patients' perceptions of risk; define relative, attributable, and absolute risk; communicate three means of presenting risk and describe the advantages of each; counsel patients effectively by considering at least three patient characteristics; and apply at least one patient education tool that can be used to effectively communicate the risks and benefits of hormonal contraceptives.
ARHP is sponsoring the webinar as part of its new continuing medical education visiting faculty program, "Risk Made Real: A Case-Based Approach to Addressing Risk in Contraception." The goal of this program is to provide healthcare providers and their patients with the knowledge and practical tools they need to appropriately contextualize and understand the risks and benefits of all forms of contraception.
"Healthcare providers are reluctant to discuss the range of birth control options currently available with all of their patients due to time restraints, gaps in education, or clinical misperceptions," states an ARHP release regarding the new program. "On the other hand, patients are hesitant to explore all appropriate hormonal and non-hormonal methods due to lack of knowledge and fears about risk perpetuated by culture and the media."

NPWH schedules annual conference
Sign up for the 15th annual conference of the National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women' s Health (NPWH), scheduled for Oct. 10-13 at the Ritz-Carlton Orlando (FL) — Grande Lakes.
The conference will offer information on such topics as management of fertility by providing effective contraception; safe, effective treatment of menopausal symptoms; highlights of the 2012 cervical cancer screening guidelines; and provision of male sexual and reproductive healthcare. The Oct. 10 preconference will cover gynecologic care of the older woman and women' s health pharmacology topics. Optional workshops during the conference include a continuing education session on the intrauterine device and a non-continuing education session on the contraceptive implant. Both have class limits, so early registration is suggested.
