Eight keys to using midlevel providers
Here are eight keys to successful use of midlevel providers:
- Develop protocols that clearly set out what type of patients are referred to what type of provider.
- Set up a triage system to make sure your protocols are followed.
- Have a professional, such as an RN, handle your telephone triage.
- Make sure the midlevel providers you hire are graduates of a fully accredited program.
- Check all references for potential employees, and look at the average number of patients they see each day.
- Make sure the midlevel provider wants to fulfill the primary role you establish, such as treating patients or education.
- Set up formal policies and procedures for follow-up and review.
- Check with each of your payers to make sure you follow the proper procedures on claims for midlevel provider services.
