HHS: New 1999 Medicare deductible and premium
The Department of Health and Human Services has calculated new 1999 rates for the Medicare Part A deductible and Part B monthly premium, the amounts recalculated each year to reflect changes in health care costs and the Medicare law. The Part B premium covering physician services, hospital outpatient care, durable medical equipment, and other services outside hospitals increases by $1.70 — the first increase since 1997 — for a total monthly premium of $45.50. The Part A deductible for inpatient hospital care rises by $4, about ½%, to $768. The small increase largely reflects savings from reductions in Medicare hospital payments and other program changes signed into law to help protect and preserve the Medicare Hospital Insurance Trust Fund. Last year, the deductible also rose by only $4.
