ACE inhibitor fosinopril is effective for diabetics
ACE inhibitor fosinopril proved effective for diabetic hypertensive patients targeted in a four-year study called FACET (Fosinopril Amlodipine Cardiovascular Events Trial). The randomized trial of 380 patients found the risks of heart attack and strokes were 51% less in patients treated with fosinopril, compared with those given the long-acting calcium channel blocker amlodipine.
And while researchers were careful to note that both drugs are equally safe to use with diabetics, when it comes to stroke and heart attack prevention, the results were "quite unexpected," according to Marco Pahor, MD, at the University of Tennessee-Memphis.
Evidence mounts for change
"The results are supported by other very recently published studies on the treatment of hypertension in diabetic patients. The evidence suggests that ACE inhibitors and low-dose diuretics are the treatment of choice for preventing cardiovascular events in these patients," says Pahor.
