Institute seeks monitoring of behavioral health care
The Institute of Medicine in Washington DC, has sharply criticized accrediting organizations and managed care plans for not adequately monitoring managed behavioral health care plans.
A report published by an Institute of Medicine committee recommends managed care plans provide consumers with clear descriptions of plan benefits and grievance procedures and eliminate gag clauses on physicians. It also recommends accreditation organization assess the outcomes of care rather than the structure and process. The report also calls for better training for primary care physicians in treating patients with mental health and substance abuse problems.
