The ASI is used to gather patient information about severity of problems in the following areas: medical, drug abuse/use, employment, and support status legal, family and social, and psychological. This package includes the ASI, along with a PC diskette for use in calculating patients’ individual scores. Also in the package is an abundance of how-to information, including a resource guide, a training facilitator’s guide, and two videotapes. The videotapes are excellent tools for training intake workers and other service providers in the administration of the ASI.

This package is designed to help program administrators and staff with no experience in outcome monitoring plan and conduct evaluations of their treatment services. The package includes three books (An Overview and Case Study, A Guide to Program Evaluation, and A Resource Manual). In addition, there are loose-leaf worksheets and agendas for programs that wish to use a team approach to evaluation.

Patient Placement Criteria for the Treatment of Substance-Related Disorders: ASAM PPC-2. Chevy Chase, MD: American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM); 1996.
This second edition of the ASAM patient placement criteria is a response to the demand for a wider range of options for patient detoxification and for criteria to address long-term recovery and opioid maintenance. It provides two sets of guidelines (one for adults and one for adolescents) and five levels of service for each group. The levels of service are Level 0.5 early intervention; Level I outpatient services; Level II intensive outpatient/partial hospitalization services; Level III residential/inpatient services; and Level IV medically managed intensive inpatient services.
For each level of care, a brief overview of the services available for particular severities of addiction and related problems is presented. Also given is a structured description of the settings, staff, and services, as well as criteria for admission, continued service, and discharge for the following six dimensions: acute intoxication/withdrawal potential; biomedical conditions and complications; emotional/behavioral conditions and complications; treatment acceptance/resistance; relapse/continued use potential; and recovery/living environment.
