Prenatal program saves CIGNA over $2.4 million
A recent survey by CIGNA, a Philadelphia-based insurance and health services firm, showed that its worksite prenatal program, Health Babies, resulted in $2.4 million in avoided medical costs. The Healthy Babies program, now in its fifth year, encourages early and regular prenatal care and helps produce healthier, less complicated pregnancies. Many of the participants had high-risk pregnancies, e.g., difficulty conceiving and previous miscarriages. The average cost per pregnancy of program participants was about $1,370. Had they not had the program interventions, independent statisticians at Mangen Research Associates in Minneapolis calculated that figure would have been closer to $6,000.
"I think pre-natal education is a very important component of preventive care," says Catherine L. Hawkes, MSN, assistant vice president of CIGNA Working Well. "But we also had a group of highly motivated women who took advantage of what we had to offer. They recognized that because of their experience and histories, they might be at risk for complications, and they wanted to do what they could to educate themselves."
