Safety group offers insight on why errors occur
The National Patient Safety Foundation of the American Medical Association in Chicago hosted a five-hour briefing last fall distinguished not only by its important subject content, but by the fact that it was simulcast by live audio via the World Wide Web. Experts and leaders who are redefining how we understand and learn from medical errors participated in the briefing, titled "Finding Cures for Medical Error." They addressed the issue of patient safety from medical, pharmaceutical, and public perspectives. The use of simulators to prevent medical errors also was discussed. Presenters included Nancy Dickey, MD, chair of the board of directors of the National Patient Safety Foundation, and Lucian Leape, MD, of the Institute for Health Care Improvement, Harvard School of Public Health in Boston. If you missed the briefing first time around, you can go to http://www.ama-assn.org/med-sci/npsf/live.htm and hear an archived RealAudio presentation.
