Patient Safety Quarterly - One Hospital’s Plan for Phone Outage

St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah, GA, uses this emergency plan when the facility loses telephone service.

  1. Contact Southern Bell emergency service by dialing 611. Telecommunication will take care of all other problems.
    1. This is a special phone number assigned to SJH to request priority repairs.
    2. Use any working telephone within or outside of the hospital.
    3. Tell the operator that St. Joseph’s Hospital is an essential service and needs to have tele- phone service restored on a priority basis.
  2. Pay telephones inside and outside of the hospital are on separate trunk lines and may be operable.
  3. Telephones in other buildings, such as the Medical Office Building, may be operable.
  4. In the event of telephone system failure, there are 23 red telephones located throughout the hospital that will work. These telephones will receive incoming calls that would normally go to operators.
    1. The following telephones may be used by dialing the area code and number for long distance or for local by dialing the seven-digit numbers.
