The Health Care Financing Administration, Congress, and state governments have been making life hard for home care providers. But home health isn’t the only whipping boy. Have you seen what’s been happening to HMOs lately?
In the month of June alone, two Kaiser Foundation hospitals in California were cited by HCFA for failing to meet minimum Medicare participation standards; Congressman Charlie Norwood (R-GA) introduced an amendment to the Medicare reconciliation package giving Medicare HMO patients freedom to see a specialist if their doctor recommends it; and the Texas legislature recently approved legislation allowing consumers to sue HMOs for medical malpractice if they prove their illness worsened because their HMO denied, delayed, or reduced treatment.
Consumers have even gotten in on the act. A Santa Barbara, CA, family sued PacifiCare of California, accusing the HMO of torture for denying home care to their sick baby.
