Chelation is Hot Topic Despite Experts’ Reservations
Your patients are probably getting mixed messages about chelation therapy with regard to coronary artery health. While groups like the American Heart Association and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, actively discourage the therapy through their web sites, books on the topic remain popular with those looking for alternative measures to fight peripheral vascular disease and atherosclerosis.
The AHA, on its web site, notes there is no adequate scientific evidence to support any benefit from this form of therapy. The AHA refers patients to the Mayo Clinic’s website, where Professor Morie Gertz, MD, notes, "there is still no scientific proof of any benefits to cardiac health." Gertz also points out the potential expense of chelation and notes it is typically not covered by most health plans.
However, a search of the Barnes and Noble and Amazon.com web sites show several books on chelation and cardiac health are available for quick shipment, which indicates that the books are hot sellers.
One was published as recently as January 1998—Chelation Therapy: An Effective Method for Maintaining Cardiovascular Health by C.M. Hawken and published by Woodland Publishing. Another title that still sells well, though it was published in 1992, is Forty Something Forever: A Consumer’s Guide to Chelation Therapy and Other Heart Savers by Harold and Arline Beecher (Healthsavers Press). Another popular choice is Everything You Should Know About Chelation Therapy by Morton Walker and Hitendrah Shah (Keats Publishing Inc., 1997). The latter book claims that chelation therapy can be an alternative to bypass surgery and that it offers the prospect of permanent reversal of heart problems.
