Here are study results: How do you measure up?

The 46 participants in the Performance Management Study of Knee Arthroscopy with Meniscectomy offered by the Institute for Quality Improvement, a division of the Association for the Accreditation of Ambulatory Health Care in Wilmette, IL, range from office-based surgery centers that performed 12 knee arthroscopies per year to programs that performed 3,800 knee arthroscopies per year. A few of the key findings of the study include:

- 64% of the respondents say the first case of the day starts on time.

- 54% of the respondents say all cases start on time.

- Median pre-procedure time, which is defined as the time from when the patient arrives in the holding area to the time the patient is in the operating room, is 60 minutes.

- Median procedure time is 30 minutes and is defined as the start of surgery to the completion of surgery.

- Discharge time is defined as the time the patient leaves the operating room to the time the patient is leaving the recovery area. Median discharge time is 90 minutes.

- Turnover time between procedures includes setup for the procedure and cleanup after the procedure. The median time reported in the study is 32 minutes.
