Organization offers certification for nurses

Exam focuses on managed care issues

The American Association of Managed Care Nurses (AAMCN) in Glen Allen, VA, has released a home study version of its two-day managed care nursing course titled "A Comp rehensive Introduction to Managed Care Nursing."

The home study version of the course, which helps nurses prepare for the association’s certified managed care nurse (CMCN) exam, includes audiotapes and a course manual and covers the same material as the two-day course. Topics include an overview of the managed care nurse’s role, ethics, provider compensation, and the benefits of managed care to the patient.

About 600 nurses now hold the CMCN certification, first available in 1997, according to AAMCN. Another 1,200 have taken the two-day course but have not yet applied for the certification exam available through Sylvan Learning Centers nationwide. Nurses who take the two-day course receive 14.1 nursing continuing education contact hours and 13 CCM (certified case manager) continuing education units. Participants must be licensed nurses. The cost of both the home study version and the two-day course is $295 for AAMCN members and $395 for nonmembers.
