CHAP goes after hospice deemed status
The Community Health Accreditation Program (CHAP) of New York City, which accredits home health agencies, hospices, and other home care providers, announced recently that it has submitted an application to the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) in Baltimore for authority to grant deemed status for Medicare certification to hospices that pass CHAP accreditation.
A 210-day timeline for HCFA to review and validate CHAP's program began July 10, which means CHAP could be granted deeming authority for hospices by February 1999. The review process includes sending HCFA representatives on survey visits to observe CHAP surveyors in action.
The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, based in Oakbrook Terrace, IL, had previously applied for deeming status for hospices and is also in its HCFA review period. Both organizations already offer deeming authority for home health agency certification. The Joint Commission is the larger accrediting program for both home health and hospice, but CHAP has accredited hospices since 1989.
