Scaffold safety course now available nationwide
Special training in scaffold safety and compliance with the new scaffolding standard is now available at sites around the country.
The scaffold safety course is a one-day training program specially designed to satisfy the training requirements of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) new scaffold standard, which became effective Nov. 29, 1996. It covers such risks as falls, falling objects, electrical hazards, and access to and from the scaffold. The course also addresses proper scaffold use, material handling, maximum loads for scaffolds, and other OSHA requirements.
Before the new standard took effect, more than 9,500 workers were injured and 80 workers were killed each year in scaffold mishaps. The new OSHA scaffolding standards are expected to prevent 4,500 injuries and 50 deaths a year among the 2.3 million U.S. construction workers who frequently use scaffolds.
The training is provided at 12 OSHA education centers in Keene, NH; Lockport, NY; Washington, DC; Atlanta; St. Paul, MN; Ypsilanti, MI; Dekalb, IL; Mesquite, TX; Kansas City, MO; Lakewood, CO; San Diego; and Seattle.
The course is produced jointly by OSHA and the United Brotherhood of Carpenters in Washington, DC. The carpenters’ union plans to offer training soon at 250 additional sites around the country. For more information on those training sites, contact the union at (202) 546-6206, Ext. 293.
