Joint Commission revises fire-drill standards
The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations has revised its fire-drill standards to state that at least half of fire drills must be unannounced. The new standard, which affects hospitals and surgery centers, became effective
July 1.
The standard includes the following changes:
- Critique all fire drills to identify deficiencies and opportunities for improvement.
- Train all personnel in fire response according to the facility fire plan. Evaluate the effectiveness of the training at least annually.
- Include training in general facility protocols and aspects of fire response that are unique to the individual’s duties and work site.
