Child grief resources available
In an effort to help people understand the special needs of grieving children, the Hospice Founda-tion of America (HFA) devoted a recent issue of its newsletter, Journeys, to offering advice to those assisting children dealing with loss and grief.
"Children may or may not face the death of a loved one, but they will eventually deal with losses due to relocation, separation, illness, breakups, or other events where they experience some of the emotions or reactions tied to grief," says Jack Gordon, HFA chairman and CEO. "It’s important for adults to take advantage of resources which will help them address the needs of young people coping with loss."
The newsletter includes articles on how to recognize grief in children and how to respond to it, helping adolescents cope with grief, and myths about childhood grieving. HFA says the information is aimed at teachers, counselors, health care professionals, and parents.
The newsletter is part of an overall effort by HFA to provide resources to help deal with childhood grief, including a video teleconference and a book. Journeys is a monthly bereavement newsletter focused on helping people to cope with the death of a loved one.
