CMV guidelines published
The International AIDS Society-USA has compiled a series of diagnosis and treatment recommendations for AIDS patients suffering from cytomegalovirus (CMV). The panel's basic tenets include that HIV patients with CMV should be treated with the potent protease combination antiretrovirals given to the majority of AIDS patients, while also maintaining a specific concurrent regimen for CMV.
The panel noted that more study is needed on what, if any, effects standard combination therapies have on CMV disease, but at present see no evidence to adjust a regimen for CMV.
The recommendations are specific to CMV retinitis and CMV-related gastrointestinal, neurologic, and pulmonary disease.
