New endoluminal stent graft used for aortic aneurysm
Dutch researchers have found that using a new endoluminal stent graft for infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm is an effective alternative to major surgery.
In 154 patients at the University of Amsterdam in The Netherlands, surgeons prospectively studied the use of a stent-graft endoprosthesis made of nitinol and covered with polyester fabric for treating infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysms. The prostheses were advanced through the patients’ femoral arteries and placed under fluoroscopic guidance. The primary success rate for the procedure ranged from 86% to 87%, depending on which type of graft was used. Only three patients had to undergo traditional open surgery following the procedure. There was one death.
