You'll save money, or get your money back
It's a common sales pitch today: Use our product and you'll save a bundle. Mediware Information Systems of Melville, NY, has upped the ante with a guarantee: You'll save at least the cost of the OR management system within a year of installation, or you'll receive a rebate.
The "Surgiware" system performs six major functions: scheduling, on-line preference card management, intraoperative charting of cases, automated charging, inventory control, and management reporting. It promises to reduce wasted supplies and lost charges and to improve scheduling, OR utilization, and productivity, says vice president John Esposito.
Computers, which are placed in each OR as well as the front desk and other key locations, allow immediate processing of information, Esposito says. For example, the computer displays the preference list during the case. Additional supplies can be logged immediately for billing purposes, and opened, but unused supplies can be recorded to monitor waste, Esposito says.
The circulating nurse also can record case and incident information on a computer-based operative report, he says.
The Surgiware system costs $150,000 to $750,000, depending on the size of the facility. The rebate guarantee is based on an audit of cost-savings by ISH, an independent auditing firm based in Cedar Grove, NJ. The audit costs an additional $20,000 to $30,000, which is included in the guarantee, Esposito says.
