OIG may visit hospitals to check on JCAHO
Your health care facility could be visited soon by investigators from the federal Office of the Inspector General (OIG), but their real focus is on the Joint Commission. The OIG has announced a major investigation of the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations in Oakbrook Terrace, IL, aimed at the accreditation of general acute care hospitals participating in Medicare. In a statement provided to the Joint Commission, the OIG explained that it was investigating because "patient harm in hospitals has become a frequent headline, calling into question the current system of oversight."
As part of the federal government’s look at how well the Joint Commission is overseeing hospital quality, the OIG will send its inspectors to accompany Joint Commission investigators on visits through October 1997.
