Balloon-expandable prostheses placed in compressible vascular sites can cause restenosis, according to a recent article in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.1
A team of investigators looked at causes for restenosis within superficial femoral arteries and hemodialysis conduits both subject to extrinsic compression. Stent compression is readily detected by intravascular ultrasound but not by angiography.
