Unannounced survey topics for home care
If a Joint Commission surveyor pays a surprise visit to your home care agency in 1997, you’ll be better prepared if you know what they’re looking for ahead of time. The Joint Commission has determined the most problematic areas for home health agencies during last year’s surveys:• care planning process;
• leadership-operations;
• human resources management;
• surveillance, prevention, and control of infection;
• patient assessment.
Random, unannounced surveys that focus on these problem areas will be conducted at approximately halfway through the accreditation cycle of 5% of the accredited agencies.
Home care companies with medical equipment accreditation had problems with all of the above topics, except patient assessment. Instead, equipment management completed their list.
Similarly, home care companies surveyed under the pharmacy standards had problems in environmental safety and patient-specific data, in addition to human resources management, care planning process, and leadership-operations. t
