Hughes and Lockheed called finest in OH
The American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM) in Arlington Heights, IL, has chosen two companies as the winners of the first annual Corporate Health Achievement Award. The winners are Hughes Electronics Corp. in Los Angeles and Lockheed Martin Energy Systems in Oak Ridge, TN.
Company recognized for integrating benefits
Hughes Electronics designs and manufactures advanced electronics systems. The company was recognized for its integration of health care benefits for company employees and their families. Costs and outcomes for the many health benefits offered to employees are measured and managed by a centralized team with active involvement from the occupational medical director.
Hughes also has developed a system of accountability for its occupational medicine programs, with measurements based on total quality management principles.
Lockheed Martin Energy Systems manages two major energy-related facilities for the U.S. Department of Energy. Lockheed won the award for its comprehensive occupational health programs and measurable results. Lockheed Martin has a disaster preparedness program that strongly impressed the team of trained examiners reviewing all the award applicants.
The team of examiners looked for comprehensive and innovative programs with measurable results in 23 occupational and environmental health categories. In the first year of the award program, any North American manufacturing company with more than 5,000 employees was eligible to apply. For the 1998 award, there will be two levels of eligibility medium-sized manufacturing companies employing between 1,000 and 5,000 employees, and large service companies employing more than 5,000 employees.
In addition to the two winners, ACOEM recognized Eli Lilly in Indianapolis for excellence and innovative employee health services. The research-based pharmaceutical company was commended for its on-site physical therapy, mammography, private infant feeding, and colonoscopy programs.
