Booklet provides advance directive education
Do you have a good education plan on advance directives in place to comply with Joint Commission standards?
A new booklet aimed at helping you develop a good education plan on advance directives is now available to patient educators. The guide was recently published by the University of California San Francisco (UCSF)/Mount Zion Medical Center with the aid of a $5,000 grant from the Women’s Auxiliary at the medical center. The booklet, Planning for Your Future: An Approach to Life and Death with Dignity, was developed by a group of 24 experts including physicians, ethicists, nurses, and therapists who work at Mount Zion and the UCSF Cancer Center.
Discussion about such procedures as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), artificial breathing, or emergency surgery procedures should take place before such interventions are likely to be used, says Ernest Rosenbaum, MD, clinical professor of medicine at Mount Zion and book co-author. "People want to be able to make these decisions, and this guide provides the information in a concise, easy, readable version," he says.
