Florida Insurance Commissioner may take over HMO
Florida Insurance Commissioner Bill Nelson has asked a Leon County circuit court to give South Florida health plan Sunrise Healthcare Plan until late August to come up with a plan to get out of financial trouble, or else it will be taken over by state insurance regulators.Sunrise, which serves about 15,000 HMO members, shows liabilities exceeding assets by $583,000 in its latest financial report dated May 31. Sunrise representatives are scheduled to appear in court Aug. 27 to tell the judge why it should not be put in receivership for liquidation by state insurance regulators. Until then, Sunrise is not allowed to write any new or renewal business.
