Watch out for these VAC complications
Complications resulting from the use of the Vacuum Assisted Closure System, though infrequent, included the following:
• Tissue adjacent to the evacuation tube eroded when the tube was positioned directly over a bone or when the patient lay on the tube.
• Granulation tissue occasionally grew into the foam dressing when the dressing was left in place for more than 48 hours.
• Late infection developed in two cases because of the overgrowth of granulation tissue and adhesion of adjacent tissue.
• Pain requiring narcotic analgesia occasionally occurred in traumatic wounds, but it was not always possible to determine whether the cause was the device or the trauma. Pain usually diminished 20 minutes after the initial compression of the dressing.
