Health care fraud crime of the ’90s, says FBI
The number of Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) health care-related investigations tripled to 2,200 cases between 1992 and 1996, reports a recent Justice Department study.
"Health care fraud is the crime of the 90s," says the report. "Schemes are changing and growing more sophisticated. Unscrupulous persons and companies can be found in every health care profession and industry . . . and every part of the country."
Among the new areas the FBI plans to begin investigating over the next few months are unnecessary transfers of hospital patients to other hospitals or institutions such as skilled nursing facilities or nursing homes in order to increase reimbursement rates, say Justice Department sources.
