OSHA awards grants for workplace training
Six nonprofit organizations are providing training in scaffold safety and the prevention of workplace violence, thanks to $816,000 in grants provided recently by OSHA. The groups plan to train about 6,000 people, who will then train others.
The six groups were chosen from 203 that applied for the grants. The groups offering training to occupational health professionals and employer representatives on scaffold safety are as follows:
1. International Masonry Institute in Washington, DC.
2. Laborers-AGC Education and Training Fund in Pomfret Center, CT.
3. National Ironworkers and Employers Apprenticeship Training and Journeymen Upgrading Fund in Washington, DC.
4. United Brotherhood of Carpenters Health and Safety Fund of North America.
These groups are offering training on workplace violence:
5. Regents of the University of California in Berkeley, which will target drivers, retail workers, health care and mental health workers, social service workers, and school employees.
6. United Food and Commercial Workers International Union in Washington, DC. This course will train local union leaders and staff representing retail workers.
