Looking for help putting together a curriculum to instruct staff on teaching techniques? You might talk to a consultant who specializes in teaching staff to teach. Johnson, MA, conducts seminars on "Tips for Teaching" and in-depth workshops on teaching techniques. She adapts the curriculum to the needs of the institution. Her fee is $115 per hour plus expenses.

Susan Karlins, MPH, conducts interactive workshops allowing plenty of time for skills practice. She provides handouts that professionals can use on the job as reminders of various teaching techniques. The curriculum is tailored to the needs of each institution but can include:
• patient teaching: what works and why;
• teaching patients from diverse cultures;
• counseling patients with low literacy skills;
• effective use of health education materials;
• dealing with challenging personalities.
Fees vary depending upon the length of the training, distance traveled, and number of participants.
