Profession’ Debate Update
Case Management Advisor faxed an opinion poll to a sample of readers in November 1997 and printed the results in the January 1998 issue. We asked readers to tell us whether they believed that case management was a profession in itself, a role or task within a health care profession, or a specialty practice of a health care profession.
At that time, of 106 respondents:
o 65% said it is a specialty practice.
o 26% said it is a profession.
o 9% said it is a role or task.
Since then, we’ve received 23 more responses. Of those:
o One said it is a role or task.
o Four said it is a profession.
o Eighteen said it is a specialty practice.
However, one respondent who said case management is a specialty practice wrote this note at the bottom of the returned survey: "I think case management is a specialty practice, but it seems to be becoming a profession itself." (For more information on the professional evolution of case management, see Case Management Advisor, December 1997, pp. 201-204, and January 1998, pp. 1-3.)
